February for the Sapporo Snow Festival and deep-powder skiing nearby (Niseko, Rusutsu); July–August for a cool, low-humidity summer escape from Honshu's heat. Winters are genuinely cold and snowy — pack accordingly.
The Hokkaido Shinkansen currently ends at Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto; an extension to Sapporo is under construction with no confirmed opening date. Flying (about 1h35m from Haneda) is the practical way to reach Sapporo.
The JR Rapid Airport train runs directly to Sapporo Station in about 37 minutes; it also accepts Suica/ICOCA-family IC cards.
Central Sapporo follows a numbered grid layout, making it easy to navigate on foot. The Sapporo Municipal Subway and streetcar cover longer distances.
Two to three days covers the city center, Nijo Market, and a day trip to Otaru. Add extra days if you plan to ski at Niseko (2–3 hours away) or explore other parts of Hokkaido.
Not yet. The Hokkaido Shinkansen currently terminates at Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, well south of Sapporo. Flying from Tokyo (Haneda or Narita) is faster and is the standard way to travel there.
Yes — summer offers Hokkaido's best seafood at its freshest, mild temperatures when Honshu is sweltering, and beer gardens in Odori Park. Autumn brings good foliage with fewer crowds than Honshu.
Average lows sit around -7°C in January and February, with heavy, regular snowfall. Streets and sidewalks are well-managed for snow, but pack proper winter boots and layers.
Sapporo itself has ski areas (Mount Moiwa, Sapporo Kokusai), but serious powder skiers head to Niseko or Rusutsu, both roughly 2–3 hours away by bus or car.
