Late March–early April for cherry blossoms and mid-to-late November for autumn foliage are peak season — book accommodation months ahead. Kyoto's inland basin location makes summers hotter and more humid than Tokyo, and winters colder.
Kyoto's key sights are spread out, and the city's rail network is sparser than Tokyo's. City buses (flat fare, pay on exit) reach almost every temple; a one-day bus pass pays for itself after 3–4 rides.
Kansai's rechargeable IC card works on buses, the subway, and JR and private rail lines, and is interchangeable with Suica/PASMO nationwide.
Kyoto Station is a shinkansen stop directly on the Tokyo–Osaka line. From Kansai International Airport, the JR Haruka express takes about 75 minutes to Kyoto Station.
Two to three full days covers eastern Kyoto (Kiyomizu-dera, Gion), Arashiyama in the west, and Fushimi Inari in the south. History and temple enthusiasts often stay four or more.
Cherry blossoms typically peak late March to early April; autumn colors peak mid-to-late November. Both are the busiest and most expensive times to visit — book hotels 3+ months ahead.
Kyoto works as a day trip (about 15 minutes from Osaka by shinkansen, 45–55 minutes by regular train), but staying at least one night lets you catch quieter early-morning temple visits before the tour buses arrive.
Most temples are walk-in, but a few popular sites (certain Arashiyama gardens, special exhibitions) require reservations. Fushimi Inari and Kinkaku-ji don't need advance booking.
You may photograph geiko and maiko in public spaces, but Kyoto City restricts photography on some private lanes in Gion due to tourist harassment complaints, with fines for violations — always ask before taking a close-up photo.
