The 1987 launch of Super Dry redefined what Japanese beer tasted like
QUICK FACTS
Est. 1889 — best known for Asahi Super Dry beer.
HISTORY
Asahi's roots go back to 1889, when Osaka Beer Brewing Company was founded, later launching the Asahi brand in 1892. In 1949, post-war antitrust laws broke up the dominant Dai-Nippon Breweries into Asahi and Sapporo, letting Asahi operate as an independent company again.
Asahi's defining moment came in 1987 with the launch of Asahi Super Dry, a crisp, less sweet lager that broke from the maltier style Japanese brewers had favored. It became a nationwide sensation, propelled Asahi past longtime rival Kirin to become Japan's best-selling beer brand, and is still exported and brewed under license in multiple countries today.
