Casio was founded in 1946 in Tokyo by Tadao Kashio and his three younger brothers as Kashio Seisakujo. Their first successful product was the 'yubiwa pipe,' a ring-shaped cigarette holder, and the profits funded their move into electronics. After seeing an electric calculator at a Tokyo trade show, the brothers developed their own, and in 1957 they formed Casio Computer Co., Ltd. and launched the 14-A, the world's first compact all-electric calculator.

Casio went on to become a leading maker of calculators, electronic musical keyboards, and digital watches. In 1983, engineer Kikuo Ibe developed the shock-resistant G-Shock watch after his own mechanical watch broke from an accidental drop, creating one of the best-known and most durable watch lines in the world.
